Ingredients

  • Butter
  • Brown sugar
  • Egg
  • Molasses
  • All-purpose flour
  • Salt
  • Baking soda
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Ground ginger
  • Ground nutmeg
  • Granulated sugar for rolling

How to Make Molasses Cookies

Start by creaming together the butter and brown sugar until smooth and fluffy. Add the egg and molasses and continue mixing until fully combined.

Gradually mix in the flour, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg until a soft cookie dough forms.

Cover the dough and chill until firm. Chilling helps the cookies hold their shape and improves the texture while baking.

Once chilled, roll the dough into small balls and coat each one in granulated sugar. Place the cookie dough balls onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving space between each cookie.

Bake until the cookies are set with slightly crackled tops. Allow the cookies to cool briefly on the baking sheet before transferring them to a cooling rack.

Tips for the Best Cookies

For perfect soft molasses cookies:

  • Chill the dough before baking
  • Do not overbake
  • Roll generously in sugar
  • Use quality spices for the best flavor
  • Allow cookies to cool completely before storing

The cookies will continue to set as they cool while keeping their soft chewy centers.
