Equipment

  • saucepan
  • masher

Ingredients

  • 16 oz can pinto beans
  • 1 tbsp lard or butter
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp garlic powder

Instructions

  • Melt lard in medium saucepan.
  • Open a can of beans and drain them a little if there is a lot of liquid (reserve the liquid to add in case the beans seem too thick as you start mashing), leaving enough liquid so that the beans are barely covered.
  • Place beans in a medium saucepan with the melted lard. Stir in the salt, cumin, and garlic powder.
  • Heat over medium-high heat until bubbly about 5 minutes.
  • Mix and mash the bean to the consistency you like.
  • Serve while warm

Notes

If you prefer garlic cloves over garlic powder you can add the cloves to the melted lard and sauté it for 1-2 minutes before adding the beans, salt, and cumin.
An immersion blender can be used to blend the beans to a thinner consistency.
